‘Parasol’ Open Mic Night @The Hop – 3rd December 2015
By now we should be in our settled routine, in fact that’s exactly how we managed to pull of tonights gig to the Highest quality as we have ever done before.
We have the routine of filming a pre-show interview with Anthony Smith ‘Parasol’, check! Set up a ‘Safety Wide Cam’, check! Tascam recording audio at a level in which it would not peak, check! (and throughout the night I glanced at it to make sure it wasn’t, and tweaked it every time it might). And finally myself and Josh Ward on ‘Roaming Camera’s’, but this time with a twist. The mysterious beast known only as ‘Steady-cam’ the rig that only took moments to set up and to figure out the perfect way to operate it, Josh took command of that ship and the footage turned out smooth as it has ever been. For myself I walked around with GH4 in hand, trying my best to keep still; it’s not an easy task. Maybe next time I use a shoulder rig, see how that goes.
As per usual the night runs smoothly, the audio is recording perfectly, every artist that performs has a dedicated track for their audio, same for the footage. I think that is the routine we have found to work the best. Before it was record one song then stop and start recording again. But for time in editing, recording the whole performance of an artist is much easier to sync manually incase the editing software couldn’t automatically do it for me.
We have stepped down from 4K to 1080p purely on the basis for editing on a Macbook, I’ve had problems with the 4k footage slowing down the multi-cam edit, and at one point crashing, which became constant and stopped progress in a precious edits’ colour grade. So it was exported as it was recorded.
But this week is much better.
The show is a little longer than usual, so prepare for a length watch!
